Our Shul
Bury Hebrew Congregation is an Orthodox synagogue
serving the Jewish community in the Sunnybank, Unsworth and
Hollins area of North
Manchester.
As with other cities, the original
immigrant community in
Manchester gradually moved outward geographically and
upward economically from its roots in the inner city,
establishing itself in the leafy suburbs of Prestwich,
Crumpsall and Broughton Park. The
Bury community is a result of a second generation
migration of young families in the mid 1960's who sought
pastures new away from these established and traditional
areas.
|
|
At that time Sunnybank was very much a green field
site, recently developed on land adjacent to
the A56 Manchester
Road, much of which had, at one time, been farm
or grazing land.
For a more detailed account of the shul's past,
please visit our history page.
The shul building was
officially opened by the then
Chief Rabbi Jacobovitz, in
November 1976, and is the focal
point of a community of over 350 families,
providing a
centre for daily religious observance, functions, simchas,
clubs, educational and youth groups.
|
|
Visitors to the shul often comment on its friendly
and welcoming atmosphere. If you are visiting from out of
town, why not come to our Shabbos
or weekday services?
The shul is located on the A56
Manchester Road corner with Sunnybank Road - directions can
be found by clicking by

1998 saw the opening of our
new Beis Hamedresh which serves for
weekday minyonim, small functions
and the Seed programme.
The new extension was opened 30th Nissan 5758 (26th
April 1998) by Dayan Krausz and dedicated by Mr and Mrs Brian
Rose in memory of their son, David, who died tragically of
Tay Sachs. |
|
The Schleifer Hall is available for functions of
up to 200 people catered from our own kitchen. Book your
next simcha with us. It is popular for special
Shabbat Kiddushim,
Simchas Torah, Purim and Chanukah parties as well as Ladies
Guild functions. It is also used extensively by the various
youth and social groups which meet regularly in the shul.
|
|
On September 10th 2000 the schul dedicated
a Sefer Torah in memory of its late revered warden, Sol
Weinstock. After completing the Sefer at Bury and Whitefield
Jewish primary school, a procession escorted the Sefer
along Sunnybank Road to
the shul where it was installed with much joy and celebration.
See our Sefer Torah page.
