Brownies
Brownies
At Bury Hebrew Congregation we run the 21st Bury Brownies, a Jewish pack, on a Monday evening from 6.30pm to 8pm.
Brownies is about trying new things that teach girls aged seven to 10 about themselves, their community and their world
Brownies is the second youngest section of Girl Guiding in UK; for girls aged 7–10. They work in small groups called sixes. Each six is either named after Fairies or woodland creatures. A six is led by a Sixer and has a Second who acts as deputy. The Brownie programme is called the Brownie Adventure. It is split into 3 parts you, community, world.
Brownies work towards interest badges, as of 2016 there are 57. These can be done in meetings with the unit or at home or in clubs such as swimming.
At Bury Shul we do lots of activities and badges and as the shul has great kitchen facilities, we bake, make healthy meals and also have an annual Sleepover in December.
Brownies is run by volunteers and is led by two warranted leaders, Julie Wills and Amanda Rabinowitz; both have undertaken a Girl Guiding Leadership Qualification and receive up to date training on Safe Guarding and First Aid. Although the meetings are only once a week, a lot of planning goes into programme for each term to ensure it meets the needs of the young girls, providing stimulation, learning new experiences and having fun!
Our volunteers are Anita, Betty and Karen.
We try to encourage all brownies to attend shul for a special children’s service/event once a term.
To join 21st Bury Brownies, a one-off payment is required and the fees for each term are £25. After approximately six weeks, new brownies make their Brownie Promise and receive their Promise badge. Brownies wear a uniform which needs to be purchased for the Brownies Promise Ceremony. Brownies is a diverse, inclusive organisation and if parents experience financial difficulties we would be able provide help to pay fees, for trips out and uniform.
